This tale of historical intrigue opens on the Gettysburg battlefield during the third day of July, 1863 from a Confederate soldier’s view in Pickett’s Charge. It next takes the characters to the gold fields of the Idaho Territory before returning with some of them to Wisconsin. Third (and longest) book of the Longshot trilogy, LONGSHOT FROM DARKNESS is a ride through tough, beautiful places among men as tough as the land they pass through. It is 1863 and the gold is not making its way east to the governments of the USA and the CSA. Why not? Ambitious politicians point fingers with one hand while stealing from the till with the other. There is violence in the streets making folks unsure and upset. Can a few good men sort this out? And can anyone tell the good guys from the bad guys? Pinkerton agent Rob Finn and his sidekick Lonnie Walters return to Bannack to get the gold supply again flowing to the Union. Sheriff Henry Plummer is on hand to assist, as is Treasury agent Emry. Gold from an unexpected source enters the picture, changing Finn's plans. Yet few things are as they seem. Few people are who they pretend to be. Every man is different from his neighbor; many have secrets. The good men will always rise, or will they? Picking his way through the possibilities will take time. Time waits for no man, and Rob is no exception. When will he find out the real culprit(s), and will he be in time to keep the gold from falling into the wrong hands? What readers are saying about LONGSHOT FROM DARKNESS “The tale is a good one, but it is the story shaped by the characters, both previously met as well as newly encountered here, that infuses the book with life and excitement. Many scenes make the reader feel like you're there.” Reader “Many interesting characters..... historically accurate of the time....well written.....well done.” Reader “Being an avid fan of western novels and having read many authors works, your Longshot series ranks with the best Mr. Baker.....if not the best…..” Reader

I really enjoy this series. They are a bit different from a traditional western. So if you are looking for a Zane Gray, this isn't it. But it is a good solid western/historical novel that keeps me reading. Each novel does build on the previous one, so I'd recommend reading them in order, but it isn't required. I have enjoyed that they are clean.

Longshot From Darkness Volume 3 Keith R Baker 9781542382328 Books Reviews

Ordinarily one would not expect to see a five star rating of a cowboy story, but that is exactly why I gave it five stars. While reading, you feel part of the story and the times. There is not a lot of history of the old west where you identify with the characters and feel the hard ground when sleeping out at night. I thought that "Deadwood" portrayed the people and times well, but here was gentler aura and one has a better sense of the passing of time. The morals embedded in the characters was truer than one expected also.
It's a good read.
The plot and characters kept me guessing. I enjoyed reading them and told anyone who would listen to read this series. I like learning history. Thank you
This is the third of the Longshot series and by far the weakest. The first was well written with a lot of tension and action. Rob Finn was working then as an assassin for the Union. The second and third books have Rob dealing with good mines out West as a Pinkerton agent. While the second book rambled, it was recently written. This third book, not so much. Rob used "I" sometimes in his dialogue and at other times "Ah". I don't recall his ever using Ah for I in the first two books. He's Irish, not Southern. There is a lot of repetition in this book. If the author tells you something once, he tells you 5 times. And Rob continues his loose lipped and trusting ways from the second book. Good gosh, if you know someone is a criminal, do something right away! I skimmed much of this book. The series started off well but after the disappointment of this third book, I don't think I will continue. I would rather read Lonesome Dove again.
Grips you from the start following Patrick (Rob's brother-in-law) as a member of the 8th Virginia dodging minié ball ball and grapeshot in Pickett's Charge (humbling to see Lieutenant William Atwell Leslie among the long list of numerous dead come that final day in the battle of Gettysburg). Passages like "I was taught to be mighty careful around bankers. Heard they weren't to be trusted," added a measure of levity that was in stark contrast to the horrors that was the setting of the military hospital Camp Letterman. Liked the historical adventures of deadly squabbles over gold surrounding the region of the Bitteroot Mountains to the battles among the Red Legs and the Bushwackers in 1863 Lawrence, Kansas (going to go on and read about Cole Younger as a result). Hoping there's more to the series, but in the meanwhile went on to order "Bridget's Story A Novella" by same author until more is written. Good story and I did enjoy!
This story is filled with historical facts and there is murder, deceitful characters, honorable men, Native American's who were killed for their land and family drama. Bannack MT which is the setting of many of the scenes are; sheriff Henry Plummer, the civil war characters are Irishman Patrick Murphy Confederate solider and Billy Adams a union solider from Wisconsin. Rob Finn an Irishman and a Pinkerton Detective and also Patrick Murphy's brother in law. Rob Finn also has a home in Wisconsin, but through most of the story is in the west on an investigation of gold ore theft. This writer has pulled together a history filled story.
Another excellent book by Keith Baker. I hope it is not the last of this series. Like the others it has been an extremely well written and wanting more. I highly recommend this book and this series.
This is from a very good author. As a retired reenactor ( 2nd Am Rev ) I noted details of the settings and characters, and they were well done. Oh, the stories are good too. Now if Keith will just get off his butt and get on with Vol #4.
