What is a delusion... and what is reality, what makes reality, the reality? Could author have discovered a secret that concerns all of humanity? Is he sane? And world crazy? Find out for yourself.
Critically this book is one of the best books I have ever read on creation and consciousness and how to live when every day is, more critical than the last one. Book is well constructed, but some readers may find it vague, but considering the situation... (And as it is an autobiography) I think that it is as perfect as it can get.
On concluding notes I won't say it's a perfect novel, nope. But on the other hand I would like to say that, it is a must read. The story reminded me of a movie `A Beautiful Mind' which deals with life of a famous mathematician John Nash. This book scores 4 out of 5, for its sheer genuineness.

The Idiot I Was A Lunatic From A Geordie Grangetown edition by David Poulter Health Fitness Dieting eBooks Reviews
Review by Steven King, MBA, MEd
"The Idiot" is a shaggy dog tale of David Poulter's increasing realization that he was descending into a very real personal delusion. Voices inside his head confirmed that he was becoming mad--and authenticated his fear he was becoming a paranoid schizophrenic.
Perhaps most intriguing of his about his delusions was the belief that the voices were relaying special messages about Durer's Melancholia, an engraving completed by the German Renaissance master Albrecht Durer in 1514. Increasingly, Poulter was lead to believe that this engraving, although widely interpreted today, held special apocalyptic messages of doom. Many artistic denizens would say that Melancholia simply illustrates the imagination's domination over the "mind" or "reason" and that a depressive state abounds in spite of the ever present tools of mathematics.
Ironically, Poulter's description of life mirrors this depressive reality. Sadly, through the course of life he loses his wife and her children and is torn from his garden abode a quaint place called Carraigulla. To deal with an ever increasing depression, Poulter withdraws into nature by working in the soil and feeling the dirt in his hands. His embracing of nature grounds him to the point where he even proclaims, "I am Carraigulla." His loss is akin to the child on the carousel who, although always straining to attain the brass ring, somehow misses it every time it comes around.
Invariably, the voices lead him away from the earthen reality of Ireland and deposit him in Taiwan where he makes his living teaching English to Asian students. As he is coming to terms with the nuances of this new culture, he feels the voices cajole him and force him to probe what he believes about religion, sanity, and humankind's place in the cosmos.
This book was very illuminating as the author pulled back the psychological curtain to give the reader a glimpse of paranoid schizophrenia from the inside. Counselors, psychologists, or those suffering similar maladies will find this a telling account of the voices that, quite literally, bother many of us.
Although only a few brief pages, it was a stunning read. It is commended to all who would like to pull back the veil and find out a little more about "the voices."
The Idiot, written by David Poulter, is a very short book about a young and very confused young man. The whole book is written from a first-person point of view, that of a slightly unstable young man, covering his life from leaving college until his later years. I'm not sure exactly how many years later because I was often left a bit confused about things in the story. Every time I thought I was catching on to something I would lose the thread again. It was a bit like trying to keep my head above water with rocks in my pockets. It made enjoying the book a bit difficult. Yet I did enjoy it. The writing, although scattered and somewhat schizophrenic at times, was crisp.
The main character, although I really didn't like him, was believable as a real life character. At first he comes across as just a rude and spoiled kid, used to having his father buy his way into places to live while he played at being an artist. His relationships fail because of his cynical attitude towards everything in life. As the book moves on though, I started to see that maybe he wasn't seeing the world like most people do. Maybe he has mental problems. The book starts by scraping the surface of this complex character and continuously takes the reader deeper into his mind the farther you read.
The book is quite short at only 117 pages in printed format so a very quick read. It's not an easy read because it's so confusing but when I got to the end I figured out why I thought it was quite brilliant how the author shaped the story. I should have known by the subtitle, I Was a Lunatic from a Geordie Grangetown, and the fact that the publisher is called "the mental health publisher" according to the small print on the cover, that this may be a difficult sort of book. An interesting read to say the least!
